PRODUCER Mariessa Terrell Mariessa Terrell is a native Washingtonian who has been practicing law for over 15 years, specializing in trademark, copyright, licensing and contracts. Through her firm, SBC Law Group, Mariessa provides marketing, software licensing and intellectual property law services to a variety of corporate and business development clients.
In 2003, Mariessa created Fashion Trademarks, a special division of SBC Law Group dedicated to addressing the unique needs of fashion designers, artists and cosmetic companies. Prior to starting her own firm, Mariessa Terrell worked at the US Patent and Trademark Office as a Trademark Examining Attorney and helped to register trademarks for fashion and beauty industry leaders, including Estee Lauder, Balenciaga, Revlon, Dooney & Bourke and many others.
Mariessa continues to champion the need for a strong fashion economy in DC while providing exception reasonably priced legal services. Mariessa’s work with the Deputy Mayor's Office of Planning and Economic Development in Washington, DC involves strategic ways to brand the Nation's Capital as a Fashion Capital, and includes working with the Washington DC Economic Partnership to create a District wide shopping guide, Unique Places that lists top indie fashion purveyors.
After drafting legislation (Bill 17-173) to create a Fashion Commission in DC, Mariessa was appointed by DC Mayor Vincent Gray to serve as a Fashion Commissioner in 2013.
Mariessa has lectured on branding and trademark law throughout the US and has taught fashion and marketing courses at Southeastern University and the University of the District of Columbia.
From 2012-2014, Mariessa served as President of Washington Area Lawyers for the Arts.
In 2015, Mariessa was appointed to serve as an Adjunct Trademark Law Professor & IP Law Clinic Supervising Attorney at Howard University School of Law in Washington, DC.
Mariessa is a published legal writer whose work has been featured in the IP and Technology Law Journaland Navigating Fashion Law.
In addition to practicing law Mariessa serves as the Executive Director of the High Tea Society, a mentoring program for girls. www.highteasociety.org
