Should I go to school or work?
I get it. Every doll wants to have her own money to use as she see's fit. Maybe you want to buy Rihanna's new Fenty lip gloss. Or maybe you want to help your mom with the rent. Either way, it makes perfect sense.
But, it is important to understand the difference between short-term money and long-term money. It's true that with DC's minimum wage at $16.10, you could make over $644 a week working full time at Mcdonald's, Target or Walmart. But with a high school diploma combined with a college diploma or a tradesman license, you could make $1500 or even $2500 a week, or MORE! Seriously.
School is work and getting good grades in school requires sacrifice. But, high school is your special time to figure out what you want to do. Don't worry you will have plenty of time to work a full-time job after you are 18. Believe me.
Let me also say this, you do NOT have to choose one or the other. You can absolutely do both, work and school with some planning and effort. What about full-time school and part-time work?
Try working 10-15 hours a week (including Saturday and Sunday) and see if you can still handle your school work. (And by handle, I mean, are you still at the top of your class?) Remember the more A's you get in high school, the more money you can demand from your future employers.
Also check out the DC Department of Employment Services (DOES). They have a ton of internships, and leadership programs that will actually PAY you to learn. WOW! Good luck, Sugar.
